the blue fence

old rough-sawn cedar planks recently stained blue. most fences are not blue, but there is no doubt about this one.

along the fence

grass, lilacs, blackberries, and rhododendrons along one side, a stone wall on another, a neighbour’s yard, and a boulevard border the fence.

beyond the fence

a yard, a house, behind is anyone’s guess. one street winds down a hill, ends at an ocean as blue as the fence on a sunny day.

inside the fence

a planting bed, edged in red bricks, patio covered with roman pavers – in-between a curving cement sidewalk that winds from a blue gate to a white door.

on the fence

a grapevine, a metal dragonfly, a pelican with a yellow beak, and an espaliered apple tree in a green pot.

over the fence

trees, ocean, islands, mountain and sky.

THE BLUE FENCE

the blue fence is still in good shape, a bit soft in some areas, but what fence isn’t? a few small gaps at ground level have been filled by invading grasses, weeds, and blackberry vines. Slivers of daylight can be seen between the boards, but what’s most important is the blueness of this fence: a testament to the intent of those who chose this precise blue – a blue that mirrors both the summer sky and the shimmering surface of the ocean.

fences separate and delineate, but not all divide; some prohibit or inhibit entry, others protect, even invite.

there are those who do not welcome or approve of this fence, but most smile and accept it for what it is: a blue fence.
